Capodanno / NewYear‘s Eve

Capodanno /New Year‘s Eve

In ancient times all the countries of the world celebrated the beginning of the new year on different dates, in the modern era most of the countries in the world consider the 1st of January, ie the first day of the first month of the year as such. In China, too, the modern "New Year" falls on the first of January of the Gregorian calendar, while the "Spring Festival" will be the beginning of the new lunar year and will fall on February 16, 2018.

Solstizio d'Inverno / Winter Solstice

"

The winter solstice is one of the 24 solar terms formulated first, with an annual calendar of 12 months plus 21/23 days, in the Gregorian calendar it falls between 21 and 23 December. The ancients believed that from the longest day of winter (yin) the yang (the sky) would rise and that that day heaven and earth would gradually begin the next cycle. This is why they considered it the day of peace.

The winter solstice is an important solar term in the Chinese lunar calendar and a traditional festival, also known as "冬至 一 阳 生" 'dōngzhì yī yáng shēng', the shortest day, the longest night . After the winter solstice, the sun slowly moves to the Tropic of Cancer, the day gradually lengthens so in ancient times it was said that "the winter solstice is a just burn sun".

土圭 "tǔ guī"

Already 2500 years ago, during the Period of Springs and Autumns (from 772 to 481 BC), China observed the sun with the tǔ guī and measured the winter solstice. Tǔ guī is the oldest measuring instrument of time, it is a simple pole erected on the ground to observe the projection of the shadow of the sun, through the rules of the movement and the length of the shadows, the time of the winter solstice and that of summer's was established.

Interestingly, winter in the northern hemisphere is slightly longer than summer because the Earth is a little closer to the Sun and flows slightly faster. When the sun directs the southern hemisphere its course is shorter than the northern hemisphere of about eight days. As a result, summer is slightly shorter than winter.

On that day the sun reaches 270 ° longitude, the direct sunlight reaches the ground position of the southernmost tip of the year, the sun is almost direct to the Tropic of Capricorn (also known as the winter solstice line) . The northern hemisphere is more prone to the sun. Therefore, the winter solstice is the shortest day of the year throughout the northern hemisphere and is the shortest day at the most northern position. In the north of the Arctic Circle the sun stays all day under the horizon, and becomes the polar night of the northern hemisphere, the longest. For all parts of the northern hemisphere, the solstice is also the day when the sun at noon is at the lowest level. In the Beijing district the daylight lasts only 9 hours and 20 minutes while the height of the sun at noon does not exceed 26 ° 42 '. On that day, in the northern hemisphere, there is a minimum of solar radiation, about 50% less than in the southern hemisphere. After the winter solstice, the stars of the night sky are completely replaced by the winter sky.

The winter solstice as a party was in force during the Han dynasty, flourished in the Tang and Song dynasties. That day we they did not work in the fields and the troops along the borders were on standby, all the activities stopped for a day. Friends and relatives made visits to each other, happy to live a day of "peace of mind". After the Song dynasty, the winter solstice became the day dedicated to the worship of ancestors and the feasts of the gods. Now only Chaoshan, part of the Zhejiang region still continues to revere the old habits.

During the winter solstice the day receives the least amount of solar radiation in the northern hemisphere, about 50% less than the southern hemisphere. However, it is not the coldest time, because the surface of the earth contains both air that water and is able to store heat. After the winter solstice, even if the angle of the sun is getting higher and higher, it is a slow process of recovery. The amount of heat dissipated every day is even greater than the amount of heat that is received, giving rise to the phenomenon 入不敷出 "rùbùfūchū" (despite all the efforts we can not see the light at the end of the tunnel).

Forti Nevicate / Major Snow

Snowfall is the 21st solar term in Lunar New Year's 24 solar terms and the third solar term in winter, marking the official start of the midwinter season. This year it falls on Dicember the 7th. At that time, the sun reaches 255 degrees.

77 Annals says: "The snowfall is strong, the November festival and the snow have come." The meaning of "Major Snow" is that the weather is colder, the possibility of snowfall is greater than that of a "Light Snow" that did not mean great snowfalls.

The ancients said: "The great is also Sheng, so even the snow is Sheng". In this period the snow tends to be more and more extensive.

In winter the snow covers the earth and keeps the temperature around the ground. Crops will not be affected by the cold invasion, for winter crops a good winter environment is created. When the snow melts, the soil moisture content increases due to crop growth needs in the spring. The amount of nitrides in snow water is five times that of normal rainwater and has a certain fertilizing effect.

It is the snow season, with the exception of southern China and Yunnan. In many parts of China entered the winter, the Northeast, North-West reached the average temperature -10 ℃, in the Yellow River basin and in the northern regions the temperature is stably lower than 0 ℃. At this moment in the Yellow River basin the snow has gradually accumulated, while the northernmost areas had already been covered with snow. However, in the south, especially in Guangzhou and in the Pearl River delta, the vegetation is still lush and the feeling of dryness is still quite clear: the climate in the north is very different. The mild southern climate with less rain and snow in the winter, the average temperature north of the Yangtze River is about 2 ℃ to 4 ℃, rainfall accounted for only 5% of the year. The occasional snowfall, most appear in January and February, snow on the ground three or five years is difficult to see once. At this time, the climate in the south is still characterized by fog, December in general is the month of fog. The fog usually appears in the early hours of the morning, when the day is cloudless, meteorology calls it radiant fog. "Ten fog alone nine" fog more dissipated in the afternoon, the afternoon sun will be particularly hot. To read more please click here
